This month, the arrival of the Pitahaya (dragon fruit) season marks not only the harvest of this vibrant, nutrient-rich fruit but also the dedication of the farmers who cultivate it with care. Julio Cesar Baltodano Ramos is one such farmer, whose deep connection to the land and commitment to sustainable agriculture have helped him build a better future for his family.
For years, Julio poured his time and energy into growing high-quality Pitahaya, yet he struggled to find stable and fair markets for his fruit. Before partnering with Sol Organica, he faced several challenges that made it difficult to earn a reliable income.
One of the biggest obstacles was inconsistent demand. Without direct access to reliable buyers, Julio was forced to sell his fruit at local markets, where prices fluctuated constantly. Some days, he was able to sell his Pitahaya at a decent price, while other days, he had to accept much lower offers, or worse, watch his fruit go unsold and spoil.
"Before, it was difficult to sell our fruit at a fair price," Julio shares. "Many times, I had to sell to intermediaries who would offer very low prices, and we had no choice but to accept. It was frustrating because we put so much effort into growing a high-quality product, yet we weren’t being paid fairly for it."
Another challenge was transportation and logistics. Small farmers like Julio often lack the resources to bring their fruit to bigger markets, leaving them dependent on middlemen who take a large cut of the profit. Without direct access to buyers willing to pay a premium for organic, sustainably grown Pitahaya, farmers like Julio were unable to fully benefit from their hard work.
That’s where Sol Organica’s direct trade model makes a difference.
By working directly with smallholder farmers, Sol Organica eliminates unnecessary intermediaries, ensuring that farmers receive fair, transparent pricing for their harvests. Through this partnership, Julio and many others now have access to a stable, long-term market, removing the uncertainty of selling at local markets or relying on middlemen.
"Working with Sol Organica has changed everything," Julio explains. "Now, we have consistent buyers, and I can invest more in my farm and my family. I don’t have to worry about whether my fruit will sell or if I’ll be forced to take a low price."
Beyond fair pricing, Sol Organica provides technical support, training, and resources to help farmers enhance their agricultural practices. Through guidance on organic farming methods, soil health, and sustainable cultivation techniques, Julio has been able to improve both the quality and yield of his harvests.
"We don’t use chemicals that harm the land. Instead, we focus on organic techniques that keep the soil healthy and our fruit fresh and flavorful," he explains.
By supporting smallholder farmers through out in the field direct trade model, Sol Organica empowers communities, strengthens local economies, and promotes sustainable agriculture. Julio’s success is a testament to the power of ethical business practices that prioritize both people and the planet.
