Burke Agro de Nicaragua, S.A. (Burke Agro), the agriculture development arm of Sol Organica, is dedicated to enhancing sustainable farming practices. Our expert agronomists collaborate closely with smallholder farmers and suppliers to ensure superior quality, productivity, and certifications, while maintaining a consistent and transparent purchasing process. 

What We Do

Our agronomists at Burke Agro conduct weekly workshops and training sessions for farmers, monitor yields and productivity, and provide actionable improvement recommendations. These initiatives lead to increased incomes and enhanced livelihoods for smallholder farming families. Through our integrated farmer development program, families now realize the importance of the sustainability of their land and value the opportunity for future generations to have access to productive and healthy farms.

Why We Do It

According to the World Bank, Nicaragua is the second poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, with nearly 48% of its population living on less than $1 per day (World Bank). High levels of inequality and limited access to basic services like water and electricity are prevalent, especially in rural areas.

The scarcity of jobs and education, combined with the inability of smallholder farmers to compete globally, has perpetuated a cycle of poverty in many farming communities. Sol Organica aims to break this cycle by providing financial training workshops, opening bank accounts for farmers and cooperatives, paying above-market prices for crops, and creating job opportunities for single mothers in rural communities. 

Regenerative Organic Agriculture: The Growing Revolution

Regenerative agriculture is a comprehensive approach to food, farming, and ranching that eschews pesticides and artificial fertilizers, prioritizing soil health and the wellbeing of animals, workers, and farming communities. In 2017, a coalition of agriculture and food system leaders addressed soil depletion, global warming, and climate change, resulting in the Regenerative Organic Certification (ROC), which combines high standards of organic, animal welfare, and regenerative practices. Sol Organica's Regenerative Agriculture Program

Sol Organica proudly participated in the inaugural Regenerative Organic Certification pilot program in 2018. Our regenerative agriculture initiative focuses on rebuilding soil organic matter, restoring biodiversity, drawing down carbon, and boosting farm productivity, all while supporting the growth and well-being of Nicaraguan farming communities.
