This month marks the beginning of Mango season where our smallholder farmers are harvesting the delicious Regenerative Organic Certified® heirloom Mango Rosa fruit.
We partner with over 250 smallholder mango farmers in Nicaragua and know each of them by name. We would like to introduce Idalia Margarita Ruiz Rodríguez, a Mango farmer from the Diriomito region, in the Masaya area.
We recently spoke with Idalia about her partnership with Sol Organica and how it has influenced her farm and livelihood. Idalia told us;
““My life has changed, the knowledge I have now does not compare to before. I thank the company for that. My farm has changed a lot, thank God.””
Before working with Sol Organica Idalia had technical knowledge of tree care but it was not implemented, since working with us she has received and implemented technical assistance with mango cultivation, training on pest control, and the maintenance of the land such as fences, and living and dead barriers.
Previously, only 30% of her fruit was sold, now 70% is sold and her losses are much less and the leftover ripe is used to make fresh drinks and jams.
Iadlia added;
“My relationship with the company is excellent. If I don't know something, they explain it to me and we have the benefit of requesting any training that interests us. Also, if the company requires information from the farm, we confidently provide it.”
On her farm, there are a variety of trees, both fruit and timber. There are jocote, medlar, soursop, and avocado trees, which all receive technical assistance. There is also a diversity of animals, such as San Nicolás birds, jumping spiders, bees, domestic animals such as cats and dogs, and an ox that helps carry the mangoes, and its manure is used as fertilizer.
